It is vital to periodically assess that your safety and health management system (SHMS) is being implemented properly and is conforming to all expectations. But beyond that, it is equally important to assure internal and external stakeholders that an adequate structure is in place to analyze the fitness and effectiveness of your SHMS. Senior management should be responsible for doing this, and it may involve both internal and external audits and assessments. If something is found that is not in conformance, then corrective action should be taken to ensure continual improvement.
