Welcome to the June edition of CORESafety TV — the online video program from the National Mining Association. 

Since the earliest days of mining, it’s been important for miners to do what they can to protect their hearing. 

Today that’s truer than ever because of the near constant exposure to loud equipment in environments where high decibel levels are simply unavoidable. 

Despite the use of ear plugs and ear muffs, and the adherence to safety regulations, it’s a fact that one out of every four miners has a hearing problem. 

Even worse, four out of five have a hearing impairment by the time they reach retirement age in their mid-sixties. And 76% are exposed to hazardous noise on a regular basis. 

This month on CORESafety TV, we have a new interview with Dr. Amanda Azman. She’s a doctor of audiology at the NIOSH Mining Research Division in Pittsburgh. 

Dr. Azman has been working on a new project called “Increasing the Effectiveness of Targeted Mining Hearing Conservation Program Elements.”
