Welcome to the May edition of CORESafety TV — the online video program from the National Mining Association. 

To become CORESafety-certified, mining companies must complete all 20 CORESafety modules and undergo an independent, third-party certification audit. 

The latest CORESafety company to achieve this distinction is Wyodak Mine in Gillette, Wyoming. 

Officially opened in 1922, Wyodak Mine became fully operational the next year. It is the oldest continuously operating surface coal mine in the U.S. and the oldest coal mine in the Powder River Basin. 

Today, the mine is owned and managed by Wyodak Resources Development Corporation, a subsidiary of Black Hills Corporation. Shelley Wickman of SGW Management Systems Specialists, Inc. conducted the independent audit for the CORESafety certification. 

Wyodak employs about 65 workers and places a high emphasis on safety and environmental compliance. They mine approximately 4 million tons with 180 million tons of coal in reserve.
