Since 2011, a number of U.S. mining operations have been using CORESafety as their safety and health management system (SHMS) and to promote the 0:50:5 objective.

That objective is aimed at achieving zero mining fatalities and a 50 percent reduction in injuries over a 5-year period of time. The 20-module CORESafety initiative is specifically designed to help mine operators and miners learn how to do this by becoming safer on the job.

The National Mining Association also promotes ongoing mine safety education through bi-monthly E-Comms such as this one and the monthly CORESafety TV program. 

For several consecutive years, primarily beginning in 2016, the mining industry did see a drop in the number of fatalities and reported injuries at mine sites. But that progress has stalled, particularly as a result of powered haulage incidents.

To address that, the U.S. Department of Labor has recently initiated a new safety campaign called “Take Time, Save Lives” through the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).

Its goal is for all mine operators to ensure that miners are fully trained and able to take time to follow best safety practices that can prevent deadly accidents. These best practices are largely outlined within the CORESafety program, on the 
MSHA website and through other available resources.

Over the past four years, CORESafety TV has produced educational programs on powered haulage dangers, mine pillar collapses, respirable dust avoidance, COVID-19 screenings and many other safety topics.

As a mine operator, it’s important to make sure that all miners receive proper training and are reminded frequently to pay close attention to their tasks while on the job. By doing this, you can help ensure that every miner returns home safely at the end of every day.
