Each December, the National Mining Association and CORESafety recognize National Miners Day as our nation celebrates the hundreds of thousands of hard-working men and women who belong to America’s mining community. 

With more than 13,000 mines throughout our country, it is the talent and dedication of these individuals that enable us to obtain the hard-to-access minerals and metals that entire sectors of our economy depend upon. 

Mining is a tech-focused industry that utilizes active safety measures, autonomy, mobility, and advanced data and analytics to consistently improve mine safety and productivity. 

There is nothing more important than ensuring that every miner returns home safely at the end of each and every day.  From Alaska to North Carolina, mining companies today are actively recruiting a diverse and talented employee base across a variety of areas. It’s a time when the industry is being called upon to provide solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges.

One hundred and fourteen years ago – December 6, 1907 – the worst mining disaster in American history occurred in Monongah, West Virginia. At 10:28 a.m. that morning, an explosion rocked Fairmont Coal Company’s No. 6 and No. 8 mines, killing 362 people including children who had accompanied their fathers into the mines. 

This is why December 6 is recognized as National Miners Day as we remember the lives lost in Monongah and throughout the history of mining in the United States. 

But just as importantly, December is the month that we recognize the critical work being performed by today’s miners and we recommit to improving their safety and health on the job. 

As a safety and health management system, CORESafety strives to provide the information and training needed to do that.

Through efforts including our monthly CORESafety TV program, E-Comms and safety infographics, we endeavor to keep you updated on safety improvements that are being made all the time throughout the mining industry. 

As we draw near the close of 2021, CORESafety encourages all miners to stay extremely alert and well informed as you work in the dangerous environments that mines often present.
