Powered Haulage Accidents: Why It’s Vitally Important to Stay Alert At All Times
Powered haulage accidents are among the most deadly to occur in mining operations and you should always stay alert when working around anything that moves.
Last year, a total of 40 North American miners lost their lives on the job, according to MSHA. Ten of those deaths were attributed to powered haulage incidents.
Powered haulage includes motors and rail cars, conveyors, belt feeders, longwall conveyors, bucket elevators, vertical manlifts, self-loading scrapers or pans, shuttle cars, haulage trucks, front-end loaders, forklifts, cherry pickers, and mobile cranes if traveling with a load.
These types of accidents are often caused by the motion of the haulage unit.
When considering the risks that these conveyances present, there are several CORESafety modules that contain relevant and specific information worth reviewing –
- Module #4 – Fatality Prevention / Risk Management
- Module #5 – Training and Competence
- Module #12 – Work Procedures and Permit
