In this month’s CORESafety E-Comm, we’re sharing a new Health Alert from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).

This alert deals with the dangers of ammonia (NH3) that you may encounter at times while on the job.

Exposure to high levels of ammonia can cause serious health effects involving the eyes, lungs and skin.

If you’re a miner who’s working with or around ammonia, you should always take precautions. Use engineering controls such as ventilation, and if respirators are in use, ensure that an ammonia-specific filter cartridge is used.

Important — You cannot rely on sense of smell to monitor NH3 levels.

NH3 can numb the sense of smell. While a miner may initially detect NH3 gas by smell, the sense of smell cannot be relied on for ongoing monitoring.
