CORESafety Module 1: Leadership and Leadership Development
CORESafety’s Module 1 emphasizes the vital role of leadership in fostering workplace safety and health.
It ensures leaders understand their responsibilities, develop their potential and create a culture of continuous safety improvement.
A core principle of this module is securing a commitment from company leadership through visible actions, such as signing and posting the CORESafety Pledge.
Key Features of Module 1:
- Corporate Commitment: A signed mission statement from leadership reinforces the organization’s dedication to safety and health.
- Identifying Leaders: Focus on recognizing individuals—salaried or non-salaried—who can influence safety performance and culture in a positive way.
- Leadership Development: Training programs and succession planning can help mining leaders to:
- Encourage accountability.
- Promote collaboration and action.
- Set and achieve SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Time-bound) goals.
- Alignment with HR Processes: Mining operations can strongly integrate safety and leadership development with:
- Hiring practices.
- Employee policies.
- Collective bargaining agreements.
Why It Matters:
Leaders play a crucial role in maintaining safety, health, and well-being. By aligning leadership development with organizational goals, mining companies can more readily foster a culture of safety and excellence.
