CORESafety TV (January 2024): Sentinels of Safety Awards Video Recap
Welcome to the January 2024 edition of CORESafety TV — the online video program from the National Mining Association.
Each year, Sentinels of Safety are awarded to the nation’s safest mines that have successfully reached a minimum of 4,000 injury-free hours.
The recognition includes coal and mineral mining operations in 10 categories of both small and large mines.
In this month’s CORESafety TV episode, we are proud to share a video recap of the recent Sentinels of Safety Award ceremony where winners for 2022 were recognized in Washington, D.C. by the National Mining Association (NMA), the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the U.S. Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE).
The ceremony honored 20 American mining operations – six coal mines and 14 mineral/metal mines – for their performances that year.
“Everything that happens in and around a mine happens with a rigorous safety mindset,” said Rich Nolan, NMA president and CEO. “From the miners on the ground to their managers and beyond, safety is an area that requires constant vigilance. Our honorees represent the industry’s best; they’ve raised the bar for others, and I look forward to seeing the example they’ve set replicated across the industry.”
The Sentinels of Safety Award program was Initiated in 1925 by then Commerce Secretary Herbert Hoover, a former mining engineer. It remains the nation’s most prestigious recognition of mine safety and has helped foster a strong safety commitment on the part of U.S. mines.
Technology
During the ceremony last Fall, NIOSH also recognized winners with its annual Mine Safety and Health Technology Innovation Awards. Honorees are selected for significant advancements they have made to enhance mine safety by applying technology or improved processes in innovative ways.
Reclamation
In addition, OSMRE recognized winners with its annual Excellence in Surface Mining Reclamation Awards, the highest honor given to coal mining companies with exemplary coal mine reclamation in the United States.
